Innovative system at Mustang plant recycles wastewater

OKLAHOMA CITY- Secretary of Energy and Environment Michael Teague presented OG&E with the Water for 2060 Excellence Award for a Low Volume Wastewater Reuse Project at its Mustang power plant in Oklahoma City. The award was presented at the Oklahoma Water Resources Board's annual Oklahoma Governor's Water Conference in recognition of achievements in water conservation and wastewater reuse.

'OG&E has a long-held commitment to responsible environmental stewardship. We continue to find ways to use water more efficiently and reduce the amounts needed in the production of power,' said Sean Trauschke, OGE Energy Corp. Chairman, President and CEO. 'We're pleased to receive this honor for the innovative reuse solution our team developed at Mustang.'

The Mustang water reuse project arose when OG&E's ability to reliably obtain water for power production was compromised due to the 2011 drought. Reusing wastewater was an innovative approach to improve reliability and use water more efficiently, while reducing the need for natural resources.

OG&E is in the process of constructing seven 66 MW, highly efficient, quick-start natural gas units at its Mustang power plant, replacing the existing units that were built in the 1940s and 50s. The new units will require up to 60 percent less water than those currently in place.
