Mandiri Educates Companies in Bid to Boost Taxes

Jakarta, 3 April 2014 - Bank Mandiri continues to support the effort to increase tax revenues so as to support sustainable development in Indonesia. In 2013, tax payments made through Bank Mandiri amounted to 3.6 million transactions with a total value of Rp 243 trillion. This accounts for the largest share of tax payments made through the national banking system.

Bank Mandiri's efforts to encourage increased tax payments is continuing, one of them being the provision of tax education to more than 100 corporate customers. This program, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Directorate General of Taxation, is expected to improve the company's understanding of their corporate tax obligations.

Bank Mandiri Director of Corporate Banking Fransisca Nelwan Mok said that education was essential so as to improve people's understanding of the role played by tax in the country's development.

"Tax revenues account for a very dominant proportion of the national budget, between 70-80%. We hope that this education program will help assist the country's efforts to increase tax revenues so that Indonesia can be assured of a better future," Fransisca said.

The education program is being delivered by the Directorates of Tax Regulation I and II, the Directorate of Outreach, Services and Public Relations at the Directorate General of Taxation. The subject matter covered includes policy directions in taxation and general taxation regulations. The program also makes it clear that Bank Mandiri is fully behind the effort to increase tax revenues.

To make their tax payments, people can visit 2,050 Mandiri bank branches throughout Indonesia. In addition, tax payments can also be made through billing payments using the Bank Mandiri cash management system, internet banking network, tax payment counters and more than 12 thousand ATMs, as well as other electronic means.

In addition to education, the bank is also familiarizing people on how to make tax payments through the ATM and internet banking systems, thus helping spread an awareness that paying taxes does not have to be difficult. "Synergies between various parties are needed to raise tax revenues, as well as education and information. What we are doing here is one example of such synergy," explained Fransisca.

The Directorate General of Taxes' Director of Outreach, Services and Public Relations, Kismantoro Petrus, said that the Bank Mandiri tax awareness program would be a major help in familiarizing corporations with their tax obligations.

"We greatly appreciate this collaborative venture with Bank Mandiri and look forward to the synergies it will produce. We expect that public awareness about the importance of taxes for development will be heightened and that tax revenues will increase as a result," said Kismantoro.
