Replacing lighting yields more than $200K in savings

(Uniondale, NY - July 9, 2018)-PSEG Long Island announced last week that East Meadow School District (EMSD) is the recipient of $217,901 in rebates for participating in the PSEG Long Island Commercial Efficiency Program. EMSD has upgraded nearly 20,000 lighting fixtures and replaced them with more energy efficient LEDs in all nine school buildings. The project translates to considerable cost savings for the district.

'We are pleased to see East Meadow School District take advantage of these rebates by upgrading its lighting with more energy-efficient bulbs and fixtures,' said Michael Voltz, director of energy efficiency and renewables, PSEG Long Island. 'This project is both a cost saving and an energy saving measure.'

The district has removed 19,760 fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs in its buildings and replaced them with more energy efficient LEDs. With lighting accounting for the largest portion of energy used in commercial buildings-typically around 25-30 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy-it is estimated that in addition to the initial rebate, EMSD will save more than 838,683 kilowatt hours (kWh) and $150,962 a year on its electric bill through these improvements.

'I am extremely proud that our district has taken these important steps to conserve energy throughout the district,' said Dr. Kenneth Card, superintendent, East Meadow School District. 'We are lessening our district's impact on the environment and, at the same time, saving valuable taxpayers dollars. This rebate check is evidence that our hard work is paying off-literally!'

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programs generate energy savings that are cost-effective. In 2017, Opinion Dynamics found that the PSEG Long Island Energy Efficiency Program generated $1.90 in benefits to the utility and its customers for every $1.00 in costs to operate the program, including rebates.
