Public Service : PSE&G Offers Three Simple Tips to Lower Utility Bills

(Jan. 10, 2017 - Newark, N.J.) - In recognition of National Cut Your Energy Costs Day, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) offers three simple tips to shrink utility bills.

1. Lower your thermostat in the winter
   Home heating is the largest user of energy and offers the greatest opportunity for savings. Lowering your thermostat by just one degree may reduce your heating bill by up to 3 percent. Save even more by lowering your thermostat 2 degrees during the day when you are home, and 5 to 10 degrees when you are away and at bedtime, if health conditions permit.
2. Replace old light bulbs with LEDs
   Lighting accounts for about 15 percent of home electric use. Residential LEDs -- especially ENERGY STAR rated products -- use at least 75 percent less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting. Of course the cheapest kilowatt is the kilowatt not used. Turn lights off when you leave a room.
3. Turn down your hot water heater
   Heating hot water is another big energy drain. Set your water heater to 120 degrees. If you are going to be away for more than two days, put your hot water heater in "vacation" mode - most newer units have this feature. Wash full loads of clothes in cold water. That will save on your bill and wear and tear on your wardrobe.
