Rolls-Royce has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hungarian state-owned MVM OVIT National Power Line Company Ltd, part of the MVM Group, to explore how they can work together on the provision and maintenance of Instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for the second reactor planned to be built at the Paks nuclear Power Plant in Hungary.

Neil Parison, Director, strategic accounts - Nuclear, Rolls-Royce said: 'We are pleased to work with MVM OVIT and explore the potential areas where we can work together to deliver world-leading I&C systems for the Paks nuclear power plant. Ensuring plant safety and availability throughout the lifetime of a nuclear power plant is vital to maximise operational efficiency.

'We bring deep experience in VVER technology. We are currently modernising a range of safety-class I&C systems on the VVER-designed Loviisa nuclear reactors in Finland. It is important for us to work with local Hungarian partners on the systems design and delivery phases and any associated services in the area of nuclear I&C.'

Dr Norbert Lajos Korom, CEO of MVM OVIT, said: 'MVM OVIT is specialised in site engineering, site works, as well as maintenance of electrical and I&C Systems. We are glad to cooperate with a global leading I&C systems provider as we also intend to participate in the Paks-2 project. We really think that working with Rolls-Royce, which has already a well-established cooperation with Rosatom, is a great opportunity for us.'

Paks currently comprises four Russian-supplied VVER-440 pressurized water reactors, which became operational between 1982 and 1987. These units account for about half of Hungary's electricity production. An inter-governmental agreement signed in early 2014 would see Russian enterprises and their international sub-contractors supply two new units at Paks - VVER-1200 reactors.
