Multiple governments around the world, including The US State Department and the UK FCO (Foreign & Commonwealth office) have recently issued Travel Alerts for foreign citizens living and working in Tanzania in the lead up to the general elections on October 25, 2015.

While Tanzania is generally considered a safe country, foreign citizens are advised to be prudent during election periods abroad. US and UK citizens have been urged to exercise caution during this period, and advised to avoid political rallies, demonstrations and polling centres, since even the most peaceful demonstrations can turn violent through confrontation.

Expatriate workers and foreign citizens in Tanzania during this period are urged to review their security plans and remain aware of their surroundings. While there have been no specific incidents of violence targeting foreign citizens in Tanzania, both governments ask that their citizens to take sensible precautions and stay current with local media coverage for security updates.

The election results are expected to be announced within a week of the election, which is scheduled for October 25, 2015. These Travel Alerts are in place until November 30, 2015.
