CAMARILLO, Calif., Aug. 16, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced a LoRaWAN™ network based on LoRa® RF technology is being deployed by Asia Pacific Telecom (APT), one of Taiwan’s major mobile network operators.

APT had previously deployed the LoRaWAN-based IoT network in Northern Taiwan and is expected to cover the rest of the country beginning in Q3, turning a country of approximately 23.4 million people into a "smart" connected island. Eventually, it is also expected to connect most machine-to-machine (M2M), Internet of Things (IoT) and smart city applications throughout the Asia region.

LoRa-enabled base stations (embedded with Semtech’s SX1301 baseband processor) and sensors (containing Semtech’s SX1272 and SX1276 transceiver chipsets) provide long-range, low-power connectivity among smart devices offering longer battery life and much lower infrastructure costs than alternative options. Foxconn, in partnership with Actility, a leading LoRa solutions provider, will provide both the software and hardware to launch the network, which is based on the LoRa Alliance™’s standardized LoRaWAN protocol to provide connectivity among the networks and IoT applications.

“Introducing this network in Asia is another major step toward worldwide adoption for both Semtech’s LoRa RF technology as well as the LoRaWAN protocol as the leading solution for low power, wide area networks,” said Marc Pegulu, Vice President and General Manager of Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Product Group. “By offering a scalable, low-cost and standardized solution for telecom operators such as Asia Pacific Telecom, Semtech aims to promote new IoT services that are expected to enhance the lives of citizens in cities, reduce operational costs in factories, and improve efficiencies in business and a wide range of agricultural applications through the use of sensors, tags, and actuators that interact with cloud computing applications to automate processes and make the world a more intelligent place.”

“Semtech’s LoRa RF technology allows us to build a scalable network that we can use to enable connected devices in all of Asia,” said APT New Business Development Director – Yi Jen Li. “The network deployment also provides us with an exciting opportunity to transition toward becoming a complete solution provider of value-added hardware and software for the IoT industry.”

Semtech and Actility are members of the LoRa Alliance, a group of over 300 companies committed to driving and enhancing the LoRaWAN specification to ensure interoperability and scalability of LPWANs and IoT applications. Through its work with member companies and IoT industry groups, it is making LoRaWAN the standard for LPWANs focused on low-power, long-range IoT applications. To date, there are LoRaWAN public and private networks in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Key Features of LoRa RF Technology:

  • Long Range: A single LoRa base station enables deep penetration capability for dense urban environments and indoor coverage, while also providing the ability to connect to sensors more than 15-30 miles away in rural areas.
  • Low Cost: LoRa reduces both upfront infrastructure investments and operating costs, as well as end-node sensor costs.
  • Standardized: LoRaWAN ensures interoperability among applications, IoT solution providers and telecom operators to speed adoption and deployment.
  • Low Power:  The LoRaWAN protocol was developed specifically for low power and enables unprecedented multi-year battery lifetime.
