  • Expansion of the canal and construction of a lock
  • Contract value: € 127 million
  • Project from 2016 to 2019

Stockholm, 9 September 2016 Züblin Scandinavia AB, a Swedish subsidiary of publicly listed construction group STRABAG, has been awarded the contract by the Swedish Maritime Administration Sjöfartsverket to build a new lock and to enlarge the Södertälje Canal

- a part of the so-called Mälaren project - located south of Stockholm in Sweden. The project, with a contract value of € 127 million, comprises the construction and installation e.g. of a new lock head, lock gates, lock chamber, machine control house, new sheet piling along the canal including a ship collision guiding system, head beam, dolphins, support constructions for excavations, and walkways. The project starts in September 2016 und will be finished by the end of 2019.

The purpose of the Mälaren project is to improve maritime safety and accessibility in public waterways through the Södertälje Canal to the ports of Västerås and Köping. The length of waterway according to the contract is 3 km. An important prerequisite for the construction process is that all boat traffic proceed without disturbance throughout the construction period.

"This impressive project holds several challenges. We plan to have only a few stops in maritime traffic and minimal impact on the environment," says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

"We look forward to good cooperation with the Swedish Maritime Administration and the residents of Södertälje and are proud to be able to contribute to the improvement of the standard of boat traffic on Lake Mälaren," says Pär Land, Managing Director of Züblin Scandinavia AB.

Züblin possesses extensive experience in infrastructure projects and ground engineering. Other projects already realised by Züblin in Sweden include the Northern Link and the City Line in Stockholm as

well as ongoing projects Marieholm Tunnel in Gothenburg and the Akalla Interchange, a part of the Stockholm Bypass.
