  • room8 architects named winner of the competition
  • Beginning of construction works planned for summer 2017

Vienna, 27 September 2016. The architecture competition for a residential project developed by STRABAG at Linke Wienzeile 278 in Vienna has been decided. The seven-member jury chaired by architect Silja Tillner unanimously chose the design by room8 architects, Johann Posch, as the winner of the competition among seven Viennese architecture firms. The winning design was selected for its floor plans, which allow for a flexible mix of apartments, as well as for its well-considered inclusion into the urban surroundings and its architectonic design. An exhibition of the submitted competition designs is scheduled from 26-30 September 2016 in the ArtLounge of STRABAG-Haus in Vienna, Donau-City-Strasse.

"Our project development helps to create living space that's urgently needed in Vienna," says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

"We are very excited by this winning design. Its perfectly considered design ideas fulfil our specifications and the architectural design was able to convince the city representatives in the jury," adds

Michael Markart, STRABAG sub-division manager for commercial project developments in Austria and CEE.

The building comprises about 10,300 m2of rental space spread over 186 units, most of them two-room apartments - a product with high demand on the market. A grocery store and a two-storey underground car park with 135 parking spaces are also planned. The property is being built on an approx. 3,600 m2plot situated on Linke Wienzeile near Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. STRABAG purchased the property at the end of 2015 from a subsidiary of the City of Vienna. The building is being planned as an architectural conclusion

to the intersection of Linke Wienzeile and Sechshauser Straße. The concept will be continued in the design of the public space in front of the building. If the approval process goes as planned, construction can start in the summer of 2017. The first tenants could then move into the building in the summer of 2019.

A rhythmic interplay of windows and recessed balconies of different heights characterise the façade. The coloured glass of the balconies offers a level of acoustic protection and gives the building a livelier appearance.
