Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. (President and CEO: Shunsuke Betsukawa; hereinafter referred to as 'SHI' or the 'Company') is pleased to announce that it has secured an order for a power plant (Output: 112MW; Project Location: Kaita-Cho, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture; hereinafter referred to as the 'Plant') from Kaita Biomass Power Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Takeshi Tanimura), a power generation company that was jointly established by Hiroshima Gas Co., Ltd. and the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc.
The Plant will utilize biomass materials such as wood pellets and waste forest thinning from within the prefecture as its main fuel source. In addition, the Plant is designed to be an extremely efficient biomass-fueled power plant that utilizes a reheating system.
The Plant utilizes the SHI Group's Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler which has over 490 references globally. The Company's CFB boilers are the market leader in the biomass power plant market worldwide, and this experience has resulted in securing the order for this power plant.
The Plant will become the largest biomass-fueled power plant in Japan that utilizes a CFB boiler. SHI looks to provide plant and equipment that combine both environmental performance with stable energy supply capabilities from small to large scales. This is achieved by using highly-reliable power generating technologies that are capable of achieving high levels of efficiency despite utilizing low grade fuel, thus promoting the efficient use of renewable biomass fuels, which contribute towards a low carbon society.
Boiler Type : Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Boiler (Reheating System)
Gross Output : 112MW
Power Generation Method : Steam Turbine
Scheduled Commercial Operation Date : March 2021
(*1)
Reheating System: In this system, the steam that expands within a steam turbine is re-sent into the boiler. By reheating and re-sending the surplus steam into the steam turbine, high-efficiency power generation is achieved.
