Emergency personnel responded to the incident around 0530 GMT on Sunday, Suncor said in a statement.

The man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at a hospital, it said. No further details were available.

The firm said it was working with the appropriate authorities and will complete a full investigation into the cause of the incident.

"It is premature to speculate on the cause of the incident, that will be determined through the course of the investigation," Suncor spokeswoman Sneh Seetal said.

"No other employees were injured," she said.

Suncor recovers bitumen from oil sands through its mining and in situ operations near Fort McMurray, Alberta, according to its website. The bitumen from both operations is then upgraded to refinery-ready feedstock and diesel fuel.
