Suncorp : Appointment of Chief Information Officer

Suncorp Group CEO and Managing Director Michael Cameron has announced the appointment of Sarah Harland as the company's new Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Ms Harland joins Suncorp from Medibank Private where she has been Executive General Manager, Technology and Operations. Her previous roles include General Manager - Group Technology for ANZ Bank and CIO roles at the National Health Service in the UK and QWEST Communications in Denver, Colorado.

At Suncorp, Ms Harland will lead the Group's technology and business intelligence strategy, with responsibility for all technology, digital enablement, cloud and infrastructure, protective services, Chief Data Office, projects and programs and innovation labs function.

"Sarah is an outstanding and experienced candidate and I am confident her leadership and track record over the past 16 years in similar roles will build on the momentum we already have and take Suncorp's digital capability to the next level," Mr Cameron said.

Ms Harland will start with Suncorp on 1 September 2016.

Suncorp Chief Transformation Officer Clayton Herbert, who has been acting as caretaker since May, will continue in the role until Ms Harland commences.

Sarah Harland is a Chief Information Officer with strong strategic and IT delivery expertise across various sectors including banking, health care and telecommunications.

She is a recognised global leader having successfully led the digital transformation of large scale, complex technology organisations using a combination of excellent business-aligned IT strategy, technical innovation and effective leadership.

Since January 2016, Ms Harland was the Executive General Manager, Technology & Operations for Medibank Private Ltd with overall responsibility for Medibank IT, consumer and provider claims, property and procurement.

For more than four years up until December 2015, Ms Harland was General Manager - Group Technology with ANZ Bank where she had oversight of the bank's technology transformation program for Finance, HR and Risk.

Prior to that role, Ms Harland worked for the National Health Service in the UK in various roles including Chief Information Officer for the South Central Strategic Health Authority and Hampshire Hospitals FT. She was also Program Director - National Program for IT, in England's south.

She also worked as Chief Information Officer for Qwest Communications (CenturyLink) in Denver Colorado, having responsibility for implementing a new '21st Century Digital technology strategy' to support improved business performance.

Ms Harland has a strong background in financial services having also worked for Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein in London, Standard & Poor's and Bloomberg. She is a graduate of the University College London and has an MBA from the Henley Business School.
