Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has always strived to improve the quality of life of its communities living in and around its operational areas. Keeping in line with this philosophy, Tata Power has launched a campaign titled 'Addiction-Free School' for the school students in Mumbai. The campaign is in partnership with Niramaya Foundation and Samaj Vikas Sanstha. Under this campaign, an inter-school competition was organised amongst Model High School, Vinay High School, Maharashtra Shiksha Niketan, and Narayan Acharya Niketan, to create awareness against drug abuse.

During school visits to surrounding Trombay plant, Tata Power officials observed that approximately 10 per cent of the school students from 8th to 10th standard are addicted to various drugs. Through this initiative, the authorities aimed to educate the children about the damaging side-effects of drug use, and its various consequences.

About 125 students and 10 teachers enthusiastically participated in this campaign. At the drive, the participating students prepared posters, flipcharts, songs, and skits to spread awareness on the issue of drug addiction. These students will be acting as change agents for future campaigns for Addiction-Free Schools. They also took an oath to not consume any tobacco related products or drugs in their lives.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Ashok Sethi,Executive Director and COO, Tata Power, said, 'True to the ethos of Tata Group, we have been working relentlessly towards improving the quality of life of our communities through social and economic upliftment. Drug use is a menace that has plagued school children for ages. Through this drive, we wish to make the children aware about the harmful effects of drug-use, and thereby deter them from falling prey to drugs. We believe students are the future of our society, and we wish to ensure that they have build a fruitful future for themselves. I personally commend our employees as well as the participating schools for supporting this cause.'
