Supporting a community garden in Musselburgh

Our East Scotland business unit has teamed up with local community charity Dadswork in Musselburgh to help it create a community garden.

The David Drysdale Community Garden will be officially opened on 30th June 2017 with an event to thank all supporters, sponsors and partners of the project.

Our East Scotland team delivered 36 tonnes of top soil, a pallet of bricks, a pallet of breeze blocks, as well as cement for ongoing work and two tonnes of hard-core. We also gave the Dadswork team support throughout its remedial work programme to manage these important deliveries.

The David Drysdale Community Garden has created a safe space for the families of Dadswork, a charity in East Lothian supporting fathers and male care givers. The garden allows families the space to socialise with other families and learn new skills, grow fruit and vegetables and cook on-site with its newly-built pizza oven, BBQ and cooking stove.

Creating the garden has been a key project for the charity as Kevin Young, Project Manager for Dadswork, explains: 'Having the community garden offers the dads and children that we work with to have access to a space which they don't have at home. Our aim with this project is to increase confidence and self-esteem and reduce the isolation that many dads that we work with can feel.

'Our families have been very active in the development of this garden, and we're all incredibly proud of what's been achieved. Most importantly we can see the positive impact the community garden is having, and we thank Taylor Wimpey for their important donation which essentially got us started right at the start of the project which began over a year ago.

'We're really quite self-sufficient in the garden. We've built raised beds, constructed a greenhouse, BBQ, a pizza oven and a cooking stove. Plus we've laid slabs and one of our dads carved the wooden sign for the garden to complete our sense of place. We're now focusing on growing, cultivating and maintaining the garden generally and looking forward to enjoying the fruits of our labour.'
A range of two and four-bedroom homes are currently available to reserve at Taylor Wimpey's nearby Almond Park development.
