Tenaris recently hosted a group of representatives from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) at its facility in Dalmine, Italy. Tenaris recently became the first seamless tubes producer in the world to receive ABS certification for high-strength quenched and tempered seamless structural pipes, usually used in jack-ups and seajack vessels. After obtaining the ABS mill approval certificate, this meeting was an opportunity not only to strengthen the relationship but also to share the current status of ongoing ABS Mill Approvals of other Tenaris mills and evaluate new opportunities for the future about extensions for new grades and plants.

The mission of ABS, since its foundation in 1862, is to serve the public interest as well as the needs of its members and clients by promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment; ABS strives to be the most efficient provider of marine and offshore classification services.

"Tenaris proved great ability in producing High Strength Steels (HSS) without decreasing the material welding capabilities, a very useful feature in offshore structures," said Marcus Cridland, ABS Chief Engineer Metallurgy. "As Tenaris is characterized by outstanding quality controls and a very clear and effective process flow, this was also an important opportunity to boost our industrial knowledge."

"Together with Tenaris's Product Development and Quality Departments we discussed further certification projects to work on, involving line pipe or pipes for process and power plants," added Paolo Puccio, ABS Country Manager in Italy.

Tenaris, in order to reinforce its positioning in a challenging segment such as the Offshore Structural, is extending the ABS qualification to other seamless pipe manufacturing facilities, such as NKKTubes in Japan or Silcotub in Romania.
