BlueCoil™ technology, an innovative manufacturing process to continuously heat treat coiled tubing, was recently granted a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In 2013, Tenaris initiated major investments at the coiled tubing facility in Houston, TX to support the unique, proprietary manufacturing process of BlueCoil™ technology. The state-of-the-art heat treatment line was completed and ready for commercial production in May 2015.

That same month, BlueCoil™ technology was commercially introduced to the market at the SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing and Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition. The product and a supporting technical paper have since won multiple industry awards, including the 2015 World Oil award for Best Well Intervention. (Insert link to story) Extensive lab and field testing have validated BlueCoil™ technology's performance capabilities.

The patent, titled 'Coiled tube with varying mechanical properties for superior performance and methods to produce the same by a continuous heat treatment', was received on October 20, 2015 citing inventors Bruce Reichert, Chief Technology Officer - Coiled Tubes, Martín Valdez R&D Manager - Argentina, and Jorge Mitre, Managing Director - Coiled Tubes.

'With the development of the shale exploration and consequent increase in pressure in the operations, we saw an industry need for high yield strength coiled tubing that does not contain compromises in the bias weld and performs more consistently,' said Mitre. 'BlueCoil™ technology is our response to that need and this patent is a result of years of dedication to the development of a product that will better serve our customers.'
