Cobalt International Energy used Dopeless® technology in the pre-salt Kwanza Basin.

June 17, 2016

Cobalt International Energy was working on a challenging oil well in the ultra-deepwaters of Angola, located in the pre-salt Kwanza Basin. To face the deepwater risks and corrosive environments posed by this well, Cobalt decided to run 9 7/8' TN 110Cr13S TenarisHydril Blue® connections with Dopeless® technology. As part of its complete package of solutions, Tenaris also offered technical support and running assistance from its field service specialists.

The well had a highly corrosive environment, prompting Cobalt International Energy to ask for the products to be manufactured with martensitic stainless steel. After seeing the benefits of Dopeless® technology at a demonstration, the operator also decided to use the dry multifunctional coating, which offers important operational benefits, including reduced running times and make-up problems.

Cobalt International Energy conducted the operation successfully, without re-make ups or rejects. Tenaris field service specialists worked with the customer throughout the operation to achieve the best performance from Tenaris premium products.

After running both standard and Dopeless® connections of the same type and size in the rig, a comparison of the results showed that Dopeless® technology improved running times in the order of 35% and helped the company save more than 140,000 USD. In addition, the dope-free coating promoted a safer working environment.
