Dopeless technology helped a major operator achieve improved running times, greater operational safety and cost savings in the difficult waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The well was located 135 miles southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, at a water depth of approximately 4,500 feet, amidst strong currents, large swells, complicated weather and dynamic drilling conditions.

To promote operational efficiency, the oil and gas company chose to transfer from connections using standard dope lubricants to Dopeless connections. Therefore, the 16' intermediate casing string that the operator needed to run was a combined string of TenarisHydril Wedge 513™ and TenarisHydril Wedge 523™ connections with Dopeless technology.

The Dopeless connections used in the 16' casing string were run without re-makeups or rejects, at a maximum running speed of 7 stands per hour (the equivalent of 14 joints per hour.) By eliminating the need for storage and running compounds and the activities related to them, Dopeless technology reduced 6.3 hours of rig time and saved nearly $300,000 USD.
