Demand up by 1.9% on December: upward trend confirmed

Rome, 16 February 2017 - In January 2017, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 27.9 billion kWh, a 4.9% increase compared to the same month last year.

At the territorial level, January 2017 showed an upward trend across the country: +4.5% in the North, +4.7% in Central Italy and +5.7% in the South.

In terms of peak output, a high of 54,512 MW was reached at 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday 11 January 2017, an 2.8% increase on the highest figure for January 2016.

The seasonally adjusted short-term profile for January 2017 showed an increase in electricity demand of 1.9% compared to the previous month. The upward trend recorded since last November was confirmed.

In January 2017, 95.4% of the electricity demand was met with national production and the remaining part (4.6%) was met with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More specifically, net national production (26.8 billion kWh) grew by 17.7% compared to January 2016. Hydroelectric power production increased (+22.5%), as did thermal production (+21.1%) and solar (+7%), while production from geothermal (-0.8%) and wind power (-7.4%) dropped.
