ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION IN ITALY: -2.9% IN MAY Rome, June 6, 2014 - In May 2014, the electricity required in Italy, equal to 24.9 billion kWh, dropped by 2.9%, compared to May of last year.

Without considering the effect of the number of days, the electricity demand fell by 2.3%. In fact, compared to the same month last year, the same average monthly temperature was recorded, but there was one less business day (21 vs 22).
The 24.9 billion kWh required for the month of May 2014 were distributed 47.1% in the North,
28.9% in the Center, and 24.0% in the South.
At the territorial level, the variation in electricity demand in May was negative all over the country: -
3.7% in the North, -2.6% in Central Italy and -1.4% in the South.
In May 2014, the electricity demand was met for 88.1% with the national production and for the remaining part (11.9%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in details, the net national production (22.2 billion kWh) dropped by 3.2% compared to May 2013. Photovoltaic (+10.4%) and geothermal (+3.5%) energy production increased, while wind power (-
23.8%), hydroelectric (-9.1%) and thermoelectric (-0.2%) production dropped.
The short-term profile for May 2014 showed a seasonally adjusted variation in electricity demand compared to the previous month equal to -1.2%. The trend profile is once again decreasing.
In the first five months of 2014 the electricity demand decreased by 3.4% compared to the same period of 2013; based on the same number of days, this figure equals -3.2%.
