ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION IN ITALY: -4% in February Rome, March 10, 2014 - In February 2014, the electricity required in Italy, equal to 24.9 billion kWh, dropped by 4%, compared to February of last year.

Although, without the effects of the temperature, the variation in the electricity demand for February is -1.9%. In fact, considering the same number of working days (20) compared to same month last year, the average monthly temperature was about 4.5°centigrade higher.
The 24.9 billion kWh required for the month of February 2014 were distributed 47.5% in the North,
28.6% in the Center, and 23.9% in the South.
At the territorial level, in the variation in electricity demand was split differently: -3.0% in the North, -
4.0% in Central Italy and -6.0% in the South.
In February 2014, the electricity demand was met for 82.1% with the national production and for the remaining part (17.9%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in details, the net national production (20.7 billion kWh) dropped by 5% compared to February 2013. Hydroelectric (+42.3%) geothermal (+5.6%) and wind power (+11.3%) energy production increased, thermoelectric production dropped (-16.1%), while photovoltaic production remained broadly stable (+0.2%).
The short-term profile for February 2014 showed a seasonally adjusted variation in electricity demand compared to the previous month equal to -1.3%. The trend profile is once again decreasing.
In the first two months of 2014 the electricity demand decreased by 4% compared to the first two months of 2013; based on the same number of days, this figure equals -3.7%.
