Towngas Starts Up the SENT Landfill Gas Utilisation Project

(22 December 2014) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) signs a contract with Green Valley Landfill, Limited (Green Valley), the contractor of Tseung Kwan O South East New Territories (SENT) Landfill, today for the SENT Landfill Gas Utilisation Project. Total investment is about HKD 350 million and the project is expected to be commissioned before 31
July 2016.
Towngas will construct the landfill gas treatment facilities to turn landfill gas into synthetic natural gas. The treated gas will be transmitted to the regulating station in Tseng Lan Shue through a 12 km pipeline and then integrated into the gas supply network.
In 2007, Towngas has built landfill gas treatment units at North East New Territories (NENT) Landfill in Ta Kwu Ling. The treated landfill gas is transferred through a dedicated pipeline to Tai Po production plant to replace part of the naphtha as a heating fuel in gas production. This also significantly reduced the emission of greenhouse gases arising from the burning of landfill gas.
Towngas Managing Director Alfred Chan said, "Most of the landfill gas produced from Tseung Kwan O Landfill has been burnt and released into the district while only very little of them has been used for generating electricity at the landfill site. In addition to the Ta Kwu Ling project, Towngas once again participates in landfill gas utilisation project to continue with our green mission to turn waste into energy, avoid wastage in natural resources and improve air

quality of the surrounding areas. We expect that the project can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 56,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the planting of 2.4 million tree seedlings. The SENT Landfill Gas Utilisation Project will be one of the largest energy conservation and emission reduction environmental projects in the territory. "
Towngas will continue to capture every opportunity to build a green society, and to provide a healthier and more comfortable living environment for our future.
