TOHOKU ELECTRIC POWER CO., INC.
February 25, 2014
Electricity Supply & Demand Report for January 2014 1. Electricity demand (See Table 1)
Electric power sold in January totaled 7,751 GWh, which was 99.1% as compared with the same period of the previous year. Despite the post-quake reconstruction and a recovery in production in large industrial sector, due to higher temperature resulting in low demand for heating, electric power sold fell below the performance of the previous year for 2 consecutive months.
- Non-Specified Scale Demand (Excluding deregulated segment)
While reconstruction demand increased, due to higher temperature resulting in low demand for heating, power demand in the lighting (residential) sector was 97.2% as compared with the same period of the previous year, and which fell below the result of the previous year for 2 consecutive months.
Non-specified scale demand in total was 96.2% of the same period of the previous year.
- Specified Scale Demand (Deregulated segment)
While reconstruction demand increased, due to higher temperature resulting in low demand for heating, electric power sold for commercial use was 98.9% year-on-year.
Overall power demand in the specified-scale sectors totaled 101.6% of the same period of the previous year.
In the industrial and other sectors, power demand mostly came from large-scale industrial customers, as described in the reference below.

- Large-scale industrial demand
Large-scale industrial demand in total was 104.1% year-on-year, due to a recovery in production.
Large-scale industrial demand exceeded the performance of the previous year for 4 consecutive months.
Electricity generated and purchased in January totaled 8,395 GWh, 100.3% as compared with the same period of the previous year.
(Power generated by our own hydro power stations)
Due to low rainfall in areas around the power stations, the flow rate was 96.2% during this period. The flow rate was still higher than that of previous year (88.4%), hydro power generation increased 117
GWh, year-on-year, to 499 GWh.
(Power generated by our own thermal power stations)
Since operation of power stations was different from that of the same period of the previous year, generated output totaled 6,287 GWh, an increase of 555 GWh from the same period of the previous year.
(Power generated by our own nuclear power stations)
All units of Onagawa nuclear power station and unit 1 of Higashidori nuclear power station have been shut down because of regular inspection, so there was no nuclear power generation.
(Power generated by our own renewable power stations)
Since operation of geothermal power stations was different from that of the same period of the previous year, generated output totaled 77 GWh, an increase of 2 GWh, year-on-year.
(Power purchased)
Since operation of thermal power station of other companies was different from that of the same period of the previous year, total power purchased from others totaled 2,238 GWh, a decrease of 200 GWh from the same period of the previous year.
