Review of the Construction Schedule for Safety Measures of Higashidori Nuclear Power Station

Unit 1

Tohoku EPCO has been aiming to complete construction work on safety measures of the Higashidori Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 in FY2019 while incorporating the latest findings into the work in parallel with responding to assessments on conformity to the new regulatory standards.

In the process of the conformity assessment, we explained that we judge the fault just below seismic critical facilities, such as the reactor building, to be inactive for the foreseeable future. This our explanation has been judged to be appropriate by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. However, we think that it will take a certain period of time before assessments on the activity of other faults in the premises and plants/facilities are completed.

In relation to construction work on safety measures we have been dedicating ourselves to, we need to incorporate the latest findings obtained from the conformity assessment into our design and construction work.

In light of the situation mentioned above, we reconsidered the construction schedule for overall safety measures; consequently, we have decided to strive to complete the construction work in FY2021.

We will continue improving safety of our nuclear power stations beyond meeting the new regulatory standards and make preparations for resuming operations with the understanding of local communities and residents.
