Russian Company to Supply Railroad Cars for RUSAL Project in Guinea

15.02.2018

Moscow, February 15, 2018, - UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, Euronext: RUSAL/RUAL, Moscow Exchange: RUAL), a leading global aluminium producer, is pleased to announce the commencement of railroad car deliveries to Guinea. Thisis part of the implementation of the first stage of a project to develop the Dian-Dian bauxite deposit. After a competitive international bidding process, this was won by Russia's PJSC Research and Production Corporation United Wagon Company (UWC RPC) who will undertake the contract.

As part of the project, a total of 114 hopper cars are to be delivered. The rolling stock is going to be used to carry bauxites from the world's largest Dian-Dian bauxite deposit in Boke, Guinea, which is being developed by RUSAL. The railroad cars are built and equipped in accordance with the requirements of the standard of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), which include the necessary requirements for the car dimensions, bogies, and coupling and braking equipment. The railroad cars are designed for use in harsher conditions of more abrasive and corrosive wear-and-tear, taking into account the African country's tropical climate. The hopper cars are going to be produced by TikhvinSpetsMash, another subsidiary of UWC RPC.

Yakov Itskov, Director of Alumina Division at RUSAL, commented: 'The Dian-Dian deposit is progressing in accordance with the approved initial schedule. Having our own rolling stock will ensure reliable transportation of bauxites from the mine to the shipping port. Cooperation with a Russian company on our international project is a clear example of how competitive and in-demand the competencies of Russian companies can be in industries, such as mining and mechanical engineering'.

The hopper cars which are specially designed to carry bauxites have a 101.5 tonne capacity and a cargo carrying volume of 54 cbm. The main feature of the new hopper cars, setting them apart from the competition, is a unique fast-unloading system for discharging the cargo into the space between the tracks, called the 'bomb bay' (two hatches on each side of the car with a total length of 5.5 metres). The bogies have an axle load of 32.5 tonnes per axle and are designed for a 1,435 mm gauge.

Maxim Kuzemchenko, the Deputy CEO for business development at UWC RPC, noted: 'Bids for this contract were submitted by companies from Russia, North America, China, South Africa, and Ukraine. Despite the tough competition we managed to make the best offer and win the contract. I'm confident that our production competencies and world class technologies will allow our company to continue to expand its presence in the global railroad car market.'

RUSAL has been working in the Republic of Guinea since 2001, and is one of the largest foreign investors in the country. In Guinea, RUSAL owns Compagnie des Bauxites de Kindia (CBK), as well as the Friguia Bauxite and Alumina Complex alongside its implementation of the Dian Dian bauxite deposit project.
