Smithfield And Weis Markets Partner With Richard Petty Motorsports To Donate 40,000 Pounds Of Protein To Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank As Part Of "Helping Hungry Homes" Tour.

Donation Equates to More Than 160,000 Servings to Pennsylvania Families

Mountain Top, PA - August 1, 2014 - In celebration of the upcoming Pocono race weekend, Smithfield and Weis Markets are partnering with Richard Petty Motorsports to donate a combined 40,000 pounds of protein to the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. This joint donation is part of Smithfield's "Helping Hungry Homes" program.

Racing legend Richard Petty, who has partnered with the Smithfield Helping Hungry Homes program to donate thousands of pounds of protein over recent years, will be present to discuss the importance of these donations from Smithfield, and to raise awareness about the necessity of providing assistance to our neighbors in need. Smithfield sponsors the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43 Ford race team.

Representatives from Smithfield and Weis Markets, alongside Petty, will present the donation to the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank on Friday, August 1st, at 1:00 p.m. at the Weis Markets store located at 237 South Mountain Blvd, Mountain Top, PA.

In addition, the first 50 fans to arrive prior to the start of the donation will receive a wristband to participate in an on-site autograph session following the donation presentation, during which Petty will sign one item per fan.

"Hunger is a critical concern here in Northeast Pennsylvania. Recently released statistics report 23 percent of children suffer from food insecurity," said Gene Brady, Executive Director of Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. "With so many unsure of how they will provide food for their families, this donation of protein by Smithfield and Weis Markets is welcomed. Without the generosity of food donors, the Weinberg Regional Food Bank could not feed the hungry of Northeastern Pennsylvania."

"We are pleased to partner with Smithfield and Richard Petty Motorsports to make this donation to the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank and it is an honor to do it with 'The King' himself, Richard Petty," said David Gose, Weis Markets' Senior Vice President of Operations. "As a company that has been strongly supportive of food banks throughout our markets, we strongly believe in giving back to the communities we serve, particularly during a time of increasing demand. This large donation will benefit thousands of people throughout Northeast Pennsylvania."

"The No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports team is honored to participate in this donation with our sponsor, Smithfield," said No. 43 team owner Richard Petty. "So many race fans are loyal customers of Smithfield, and shop at Weis, so it's great to see them giving back to communities that support them, and our race team, throughout the year."

"Smithfield has made more than 195 donations across the country under the company's Helping Hungry Homes program to food banks that serve their communities through local and emergency food pantries, low-income daycare centers and disaster-relief agencies," said Dennis Pittman, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Smithfield. "We're proud to make this substantial donation in conjunction with our racing program to honor our fans, and help alleviate hunger in this area."

Smithfield Foods and its independent operating companies have a long history of stocking food banks, supporting after-school nutrition programs and providing food relief in the wake of natural disasters. In January 2008, Smithfield established their Helping Hungry Homes® initiatives to help ensure that American families in need do not go hungry.
