Friday, January 23rd, 2015

(Sunbury, PA) Weis Markets is proud to announce the launch of the 6th annual Weis Healthy Heart Day at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City this Saturday, January 24th from 10 AM-2 PM at center court. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women. Preventative measures such as eating a healthy diet, exercising, avoiding tobacco, managing stress and undergoing regular health screenings can reduce your risk of developing the disease by up to 80%.

Weis Markets and WBNG-TV, along with area health experts including American Heart Association, Broome County Health Department, United Health Services, Lourdes Regional Hospital and Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer free health screenings, cooking and shopping tips, food samplings, heart-healthy recipes, coupons, giveaways and more.

An engaging entertainment schedule is planned with performances by local singing and dance groups, as well as appearances by WBNG television personalities. Tai chi, Zumba, karate and Irish dancing demonstrations will also take place.

Additional activities at the event will include the famous Weis Grocery Giveaway where 50 reusable bags of heart-healthy groceries will be raffled for $1.00. All proceeds raised support the local Southern Tier chapter of the American Heart Association. Weis Markets will also sell American Heart Association Red Hearts the weeks of February 1st and February 15th to contribute to this fundraising effort.

Tune into WBNG-TV every Monday evening at 6 PM starting January 26th through February 28th for heart-health newcasts featuring Weis Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Beth Stark. Healthy Heart tips and quizzes are also scheduled to air weekly through February.
