BKF Asset Management Co. was founded in 1982 by John A. Levin in New York City. The firm was formerly known as John A. Levin & Co. (JAL). Their client base includes public, corporate, and Taft Hartley pension plans, university and college endowments, charitable organizations, financial intermediaries and high net worth individuals and family trusts. In 1996 JAL became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Baker Fentress & Company (NYSE: BKF). In January 2000, Baker Fentress completed a plan to distribute nearly all of its assets (a portfolio of public and private investments), leaving John A. Levin & Co. as its primary asset. Following the distribution, the name Baker Fentress & Company was changed to BKF Capital Group. JAL is now a wholly-owned subsidiary and the primary operating unit of BKF Capital Group.
