It is indeed the best of times and the worst of times for TV. More content than ever is being produced, yet the Pay TV sector faces new challenges to its ever-present and popular position in providing home entertainment. With streaming as the "new" model for both delivery and consumption of video programs, Pay TV needs to re-think its approach and consider new options for moving forward.

As a provider of IP enabled set-top boxes and enterprise media players, Amino has been enabling streaming delivery of video content for decades. It is our priority to stay abreast of consumer demand and give our customers devices that provide the right combination of memory, storage, SoCs - and software. The software powering set-top boxes is undergoing a its own profound revolution as competition from streaming service providers has put Pay TV providers on notice. Rethink TV's recent report "Set Top Box, Smart TV, and Connective TV Device Operating System Forecast - 2020 - 2026" reflects the reality facing set-top box vendors and Pay TV providers.

Existing devices, running predominantly propriety Linux based software, are in decline in terms of market share. Why? Because these highly reliable devices are not designed to easily support the delivery of both broadcast and streaming video. And that is the reason behind the emergence of set-top box firmware designed to simplify unified delivery of both broadcast and streaming video.

Bottom line, Pay TV operators must integrate streaming apps to make it easier for their subscribers to access all the content they love. Pay TV can compete with streaming services by making it easy for subscribers to find content wherever it is - on a linear TV channel or on a streaming service. The set-top box is the final piece of a supply chain of integrated technologies that deliver video to the TV screen.

It's up to each operator to define their priorities and select the set-top box platform best aligned with their goals. We think some topics that operators should consider and prioritize include:

  • Service launch timeframe
  • Control of subscriber data
  • Branding or customization of user interface
  • Use of UI templates
  • Required broadcast stack technologies
  • Managing updates of firmware, apps or launcher
  • Streaming app availability
  • Required certifications and associated processes

AminoOS, our device platform software, gives our customers the flexibility they need to take their video services to the next level. With options for either RDK or Android, devices powered by AminoOS deliver the expected performance and reliability, familiar APIs, managed roadmap and ecosystem integrations. Operators are able to easily enhance existing their video services while prioritizing the level of control and flexibility they want in defining their UI, developing new features or managing subscriber data. Our focus remains to ensure the delivery of high-quality video. Our commitment is to provide our customers with options to determine how they can best serve the needs of their customers. This is TV the New Way.
