CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) — CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) — American Public Education Inc. (APEI) on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter net income of $13 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it had profit of 64 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 14 cents per share.

The for-profit education company posted revenue of $152.8 million in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $150.5 million.

For the year, the company reported that its loss narrowed to $47.3 million, or $2.93 per share. Revenue was reported as $600.5 million.

For the current quarter ending in March, American Public Education said it expects revenue in the range of $151 million to $153 million.

The company expects full-year revenue in the range of $610 million to $620 million.

American Public Education shares have risen 18% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $11.37, a rise of roughly 10% in the last 12 months.
