BAE Systems has announced the successful integration of an ultraviolet (UV) spectrometer on NASA's Carruthers Geocorona earth observation satellite.

This small satellite (SmallSat) will therefore use a UV imager to observe the exosphere - the outermost part of the atmosphere - and understand how it changes in response to space weather conditions caused by the Sun.

Space weather has a significant impact on Earth, from amazing phenomena like the aurora borealis to major disruptions to satellite communications and power grids. This satellite will provide a wealth of new data and enable us to better respond to all that the Sun has in store for us' sums up Dr Alberto Conti, Vice President. and General Manager of Civil Space for BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems.

The satellite is currently scheduled for launch in 2025.
