BAE Systems announces that it has been selected by the Australian government, alongside ASC Pty Ltd, to build Australia's new fleet of nuclear-powered submarines as part of the trilateral AUKUS security agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Under the AUKUS agreement, Australia and the UK will operate a joint submarine incorporating technologies from all three countries, based on the UK's next-generation design led by BAE Systems.

BAE Systems and ASC Pty Ltd will now bring together their complementary skills, expertise and capabilities under a collaborative agreement in Australia, ultimately leading to the creation of a long-term incorporated joint venture.

Charles Woodburn, Managing Director of BAE Systems, pointed out that more than 1,000 people are currently working on the SSN-AUKUS program, and that "significant infrastructure investment is underway".

The SSN-AUKUS is already being billed as 'the largest, most powerful and most advanced attack submarine the Royal Navy has ever operated', and will begin replacing the Astute class from the late 2030s.

Australia, meanwhile, plans to deliver its first SSN-AUKUS submarine in the early 2040s.
