BASF announces a scientific collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with rice production.

This partnership supports BASF's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% per tonne of crop produced by 2030.

Consumed daily by around three billion people, rice is one of the five most widely produced cereal crops in the world.

The global production of paddy rice is generally considered to contribute around 10% of total agricultural GHG emissions.

Because of this large carbon footprint, rice production is considered to have a very high potential for reducing GHG emissions.

BASF and IRRI therefore plan to explore several topics related to climate-smart rice farming. Ultimately, BASF and IRRI also aim to help rice-growing farmers decarbonize their production systems.
