BKW and MaxSolar enter into long-term power purchase agreement for solar power
Contribution to the expansion of renewable energy in Europe

BKW and MaxSolar - one of the leading German project developers for renewable energy - have entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for green electricity. Starting 1 April 2024, BKW will draw around 150 gigawatt hours of renewable electricity from the Bürgersolarpark Kraiburg am Inn in Bavaria, Germany, over a period of 10 years.

The solar farm will commence operations in late 2023 and will have an installed capacity of 13 megawatt peak. This means the facility will produce around 15 gigawatt hours from solar power each year - more or less the annual electricity consumption of 4,100 four-person households.

PPA deals - a key contribution to the energy transition in Europe

Power purchase agreements such as the one between BKW and MaxSolar offer substantial benefits. For the owners of renewable power generation plants, the purchase of electricity they produce at a fixed price over a defined period provides investment security. As such, PPAs facilitate or support the construction of solar, water and wind power plants throughout Europe. And purchasers' benefit, too, from the green electricity produced over the agreed period, with corresponding proof of origin from renewables at a defined price.

Wolf-Wilhelm Adam, Senior Originator at BKW, emphasises the significance of this new PPA for the expansion of renewable energy in Europe. "MaxSolar and BKW share the goal of driving the energy transition in Europe and investing in renewable energy. We are very pleased with this expansion in our business relationship with MaxSolar, and that we will be supporting their strong growth trajectory as a reliable partner in the long-term marketing of green electricity."

MaxSolar is also excited by the PPA. "Our collaboration with BKW is of great value for MaxSolar, and it secures the supply of green energy for energy customers at fixed prices. BKW is a reliable partner for us, one that supports our strong growth while helping us to get clean energy onto the market in the long term. Together we're shaping the future of green energy and setting standards for the sustainable supply of electricity," says Guido Reinecke, Chief Financial Officer at MaxSolar.

Continual expansion of BKW's PPA activities

BKW has been active in the PPA business for years now. In late December 2021 it entered into an eight-year supply contract with Swiss retailer Denner for electricity from its hydropower plants. And recently BKW announced a partnership with Greenovative, a leading German supplier of photovoltaics. Since the beginning of the year BKW has greatly expanded its activities in the PPA space. In the first half of 2023, BKW entered into green electricity PPAs representing a total output of over 500 megawatt peak in Europe, primarily in Germany. Around two thirds of this comes from land-based wind power and a third from solar energy and batteries. By the end of this year, BKW aims to double this transaction volume to reach the 1,000 megawatt peak and expand its activities to other European countries.
