Daimler Truck announced on Wednesday that it intends to bring its first self-driving trucks to market by 2027, indicating that it has made "significant" progress in this direction.

The truck manufacturer says it expects to bring highly automated vehicles to market in the USA within three years, i.e. in the sense of level 4 of the SAE standard, which classifies the degree of driving automation.

The German group explains that its technology partner, Torc, has already carried out tests under real logistics conditions with its Freightliner Cascadia, a large truck, on a road linking Phoenix to Oklahoma City.

While Daimler emphasizes that its autonomous technology is intended to equip the electric version of its truck, the Freightliner eCascadia, it points out that the first autonomous trucks on American roads will be powered by internal combustion engines.

Looking ahead to 2030, the group says it hopes to generate revenues of around three billion euros and an operating profit (Ebit) of at least one billion euros a year from its autonomous driving activities.
