TOKYO, JAPAN - Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Hitoshi Kanno; 'J-POWER') has established, in collaboration with others, the Floating Offshore Wind Technology Research Association (FLOWRA, 'the Association').

The collaborative partners are NTT Anode Energy Corporation; The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.; Kyuden Mirai Energy Company Incorporated; Cosmo Eco Power Co., Ltd.; JERA Co., Inc; Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.; Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd.; TEPCO Renewable Power, Incorporated; Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc.; Hokuriku Electric Power Company; Marubeni Offshore Wind Development Corporation; Mitsubishi Corporation Offshore Wind Ltd. and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation. Today, the Association held a general meeting, officially beginning activities. Offshore wind power generation is expected to become a primary power source to realize a carbon-neutral society by 2050. With the high cost of offshore wind power generation in Japan compared with other countries and the relative lack of shallow sea areas, Japan has more potential for floating rather than fixed-bottom installations, unlike Europe.

Therefore, in order to expand the introduction of offshore wind power generation, mainly floating offshore platforms, reducing the early costs and larger, more advanced technology are needed. Given these circumstances, the Association was established to jointly work on technological developments to reduce the costs and risks of commercializing floating offshore wind power generation in Japan; achieving extensive, largescale commercialization of floating offshore wind power generation and creating a domestic industry with an eye on international markets. Through research by the Association, J-POWER will promote technological developments for the social implementation of floating offshore wind power generation. The J-POWER Group will continue striving for sustainable development and stable operation of wind power generation and other renewable energy projects to achieve the carbon neutrality goals announced in February 2021 in J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050.
