(Alliance News) - Equipmake Holdings PLC on Monday said it has been selected by Perkins Engines Company Ltd to collaborate on an off-highway hybrid vehicle system project.

The Norfolk, England-based manufacturer and developer of electrification products for use across the automotive, aerospace, bus, coach and fire truck industries said it will receive GBP3.2 million in funding through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK.

The programme will receive a total of GBP11 million in funding. Loughborough University will also collaborate on the project, Equipmake said.

The partnership is intended to design, develop and demonstrate "a range of lower carbon, hybrid power systems for the off-highway sector", enabling manufacturers of off-highway vehicles to transition into lower-carbon fuels and electrification.

Equipmake said it will develop a heavy-duty hybrid electric system, which will include its high torque density electric motor and inverter technologies. It said the development is expected to take 42 months.

The firm also noted that the deal will allow it to access the off-highway market.

Chief Executive Ian Foley said: "We would like to thank the APC for its foresight in granting support funding for this new project, which has the potential to enable multiple global off-highway vehicle OEMs to meet net-zero objectives while at the same time creating new jobs and safeguarding the existing supply chain.

"This project also represents a key element of our strategic development at Equipmake, giving us access to a global off-highway market through this decarbonisation technology, and over time a significant extension in our volume production capabilities."

Equipmake shares were flat at 9.85 pence each in London on Monday morning.
