IDC's Future of Operations framework emphasizes the importance of building infrastructure and digital capabilities to develop resilient decision-making that keeps enterprises tightly aligned with customer expectations and demands. The practice highlights how digital-first organizations will become flatter as they leverage operational data to optimize and drive better, more timely decision making, defined as data-driven operations (DDO). Organizations that commit to relying less on human judgement and more on the insights derived from operational data and its various components will thrive in the face of digital disruption.

'George-Pacific's Collaborative Support Center and Asset Health are excellent examples of operational transformation through digital technology,' said Reid Paquin, research vice president, Future of Operations at IDC. 'This initiative brought a wide range of stakeholders from across the organization to improve manufacturing processes and demonstrated the value of using AI to monitor the health of these systems, resulting in reduced unplanned downtime due to unforeseen circumstances.'

Overall Winner: Georgia-Pacific: Enterprise AI for Manufacturing Operations at Georgia-Pacific

Project Details: Georgia-Pacific (GP) created the Collaboration Support Center (CSC) to address equipment and process reliability at more than 100 manufacturing facilities. Making paper products is a complex process, especially at the scale and speed that GP operates. Advanced technologies like cameras, sensors, machine learning, and data science can solve manufacturing operational challenges - it also takes people who are passionate to make technology part of their role. Asset health was the first key challenge tackled, working with data from over 90,000 sensors and 11 different instances of asset management software. AI can detect anomalies, pinpoint the main drivers of anomalous behavior, and predict a failure, hours, days, or even weeks before it happens, avoiding unplanned downtime and significant impacts to revenue and customer order delivery. Using C3 AI Reliability to aggregate a large number of data points across process data and asset sensors, create a unified data image, and apply AI to predict failures, Georgia-Pacific has improved overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) by several percentage points and avoided hundreds of hours of unplanned downtime. The CSC has been key to getting all the stakeholders, from the business, operations, data science, engineering, and IT, to work together as a team to focus on capturing that business value.
