Gree Electric Appliances of Zhuhai : Temperature Solutions for Beijing 2022 Games

As the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games is getting closer and closer, operational tests for the sports venues are proceeding vigorously. Bearing in mind the goals of achieving carbon neutrality and peak carbon emissions, the Beijing Games organizing committee has incorporated the concept of hosting green and sustainable Olympics in venue construction and renovation, so as to have green, low-carbon and energy-saving buildings that are in harmony with nature.

During the Winter Olympic Games, it is essential to make sure that requirements for temperature and humidity in different sports venus are met because they are important factors as to whether the games can be carried out successfully and whether the athletes can perform to their best.

1.HVAC Equipment for National Speed Skating Oval

In the construction of venues and supporting facilities for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Gree took part in the construction of HVAC equipment for the National Aquatics Center and National Speed Skating Oval. "We prioritize the goals of achieving carbon peak and neutrality in our design and implement the concept of energy transformation in our HVAC solutions for the competition venues and their supporting facilities, for the purpose of green development", said Gree' Vice President Mr. Fang Xiangjian.

As the only newly-built ice sports arena, the National Speed Skating Oval requires the total refrigeration load to be 11,300kW (3,214 RT) and the chilled water circulating system to be a system with large temperature difference, in which the supply and return water temperatures are 5℃and 13℃ respectively. Gree' permanent magnetic synchronous inverter centrifugal chiller (model: CVE520PIBKIB) has been chosen as the main cooling source project for the speed skating oval.

Equipped with high-speed motor direct drive dual impellers, vapor injection and 2-stage compression technology as well as the high-speed permanent magnetic synchronous motor, this chiller can achieve high-efficiency operation under all work loads and save energy by more than 40% when compared to common centrifugal chillers, not only contributing to the Green Olympics but also ensuring the construction quality and progress of this significant national project.

In addition, Gree has provided comprehensive products and services for the national speed skating oval, including an intelligent cooling source system and BIM model.

2.HVAC Equipment for National Aquatics Center (the Water Cube)

The Water Cube will serve as the venue for curling in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games. It will be the only venue in the world to host both summer and winter Olympic Games and have water and ice sports competitions at the same time. It is not easy to keep the conditions simultaneously suitable for water and ice sports. We need to keep the "temperature" in control.

Water sports require high temperature and high humidity while ice sports require low temperature and low humidity. Curling, known as "noble sports on ice", has more stringent requirements for temperature control. Field temperatures must be controlled in three layers. Specifically, we must ensure -8.5℃on ice surface, 8-12℃at 1.5 meters above ice surface, and 16-18℃for the spectators area.

According to Vice President Fang Xiangjian, Gree provides three low-temperature air-cooled screw chillers for the National Aquatics Center to tackle the technical difficulties based on project characteristics. These units are integrated with various intelligent technologies such as hydraulic modules and equipment group control to maintain inlet water at 5℃ and outlet water at 0℃, keeping the temperature well controlled at 1.5m above the ice surface.

For spectators area of the aquatics center, Gree's packaged air conditioning units has purification functions such as electrostatic dust removal and activated carbon filtration, providing a perfect environment for curling competition in the Winter Olympics and a comfortable environment for spectators.
