Huvis (CEO: Shin, You Dong), specializing in chemical and fiber materials, announced on the 28th that it will step up its efforts for better ESG management by launching a 'Reduce Carbon 2022' initiative to help achieve its carbon neutralization goals.
The initiative will be implemented as part of the company's ESG vision under which it plans to become carbon neutral by 2050 by dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its plants, reducing energy consumption, and encouraging its members' engagement in the drive for carbon neutralization.
As part of the initiative, a contest was organized for Huvis members at Jeonju Plant to produce and select innovative ideas for carbon reduction. The ideas that were chosen out of over 500 ideas that were pitched have been adopted by offices and production sites to help achieve carbon reduction in their day-to-day operations. At the same time, activities intended to minimize emissions are also being conducted across all of the company's production sites and offices, to reduce emissions in areas ranging from fuel to electricity, facilities, and supplies.
Ideas selected last year include the adoption of mobile employee ID cards and the installation of solar panel-based EV chargers. Those selected today include the creation of Huvis Woods, an in-house flea market, recycling spots for clothes and PET bottles, and a "Reduce Carbon Day" for the company canteen.
Huvis Jeonju Site combines the company's social responsibility for environmental protection with its carbon neutralization efforts. For example, there is Love Nature, a club where Huvis members' and the families come together, clean up water basins and trim weeds every year as part of its efforts to help keep the environment in the city clean. The club also helps people in the community have greater awareness of carbon neutralization by, for example, organizing a writing and drawing contest entitled 'Green Nature and Blue Sky' for elementary and middle school students in Jeolla North Province.
"The Reduce Carbon 2022 initiative marks our stronger commitment to ESG management characterized by, among other things, a larger pro-environmental product lineup and greater corporate social responsibility. The ESG Board launched last January is working on a new enterprise ESG strategy and action plans," says a source of Huvis. "We at Huvis will continue to be leaders in ESG management by refining our ESG organization and making relevant investments based on a master plan for the environment and safety."
Other efforts as a leader in producing pro-environmental products include: the first commercialization in Korea of a polyester fiber called Ecoen, which is capable of biodegrading within 3 years after burial; the production of a fiber called Ecoever using chips made out of recycled PET bottles; and the development of Ecoen-R, a product made by combining recycled fiber with biodegradability.
