Sandra Phlippen has been appointed Endowed Professor of Sustainable Banking at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) as of 1 January 2023.

Sandra will combine the professorship with her position as Chief Economist at ABN AMRO.

Sandra says she is honoured by the appointment as Endowed Professor of Sustainable Banking. She believes banks have an important role to play in supporting their clients in the energy transition. 'My aim is to contribute through academic research to a better understanding of the impact of climate and climate policy on the banking sector. I also hope to find out what evidence-based interventions by banks are most effective in helping clients to cut their carbon emissions.'

The aim of the new chair is to promote independent academic knowledge and education in the field of sustainable banking. This includes research into the impact of climate scenarios on the financial sector and the economy in general, as well as research into decarbonisation options for businesses and households. In this position, Sandra will also contribute to setting up, innovating and implementing education in the field of sustainable development.

Thought leader

Professor Peter Verhoef, Dean of FEB, believes Sandra will be an asset to the faculty. 'Sandra has been focusing increasingly on the economic and financial consequences of climate change in recent years. She has become a thought leader in the public debate on this issue. Her research focus, in combination with her position in the banking sector, makes her a valuable addition to our faculty, which has traditionally had strong links with banking.'
