Differences in salary in sports, obstacles for female entrepreneurs or under-representation in the art sector: inequality between men and women is by no means a thing of the past.

At ABN AMRO, we think that things need to change. So we strive to help women move forward on the path to equality, within the bank and within society, not only on International Women's Day, but also for the rest of the year. Read on to find out how we're doing this.

Entrepreneurial opportunities for women

Women encounter more obstacles to entrepreneurship than men. For example, only twenty percent of funding and less than one percent of seed capital goes to female entrepreneurs. In an effort to change this, in late 2023, we added our signature to Code-V, a partnership between public and private parties initiated by the Inclusive Banking team at ABN AMRO.

Women in the art sector

Research carried out by ABN AMRO & WOMEN Inc. shows that the art sector is still dominated by men. Men are not only over-represented as artists in galleries and at trade fairs, but are also more likely to be gallery owners and art buyers. And fewer than one in ten works of art sold at auction is made by a woman.

ABN AMRO & WOMEN Inc. have joined forces with the Stedelijk Museum, H'ART Museum, Singer Laren and STRAAT Museum to do something about this. All our sponsorship contracts state that museums promote gender equality and include a condition that there must be a visible rise in the representation of women in the museums.

Supporter of women's football

ABN AMRO has been a sponsor of Ajax for nearly 30 years now, and the main sponsor of Ajax Women for the last nine years. In that time, a CLA for the women has been set up, we support them on and off the pitch to help promote women's football, and the women now play matches in the Johan Cruijff ArenA - just like the men. The 'Talententeam', comprising under-19 players, can also count on our support.

Catching up on the hockey pitch

We are fighting for equal pay for men and women in top-league field hockey by 2025. Various programmes and initiatives have also been set up to encourage more female managers, committee members, trainers and coaches in hockey. And partly thanks to our lobby, there is now also a Women's Euro Hockey League and the ABN AMRO Cup.

Equal pay

As an employer of over 20,000 staff members, we are actively pursuing policy to close the pay gap. Every year, ABN AMRO carries out studies to monitor equal pay within the bank. We started doing this several years ago with research into the pay gap between men and women. As of 2022, we also examine discrepancies relating to ethnic and cultural background. The findings identify points for improvement and help us to set up new initiatives to stimulate equal pay.
