The Mitsubishi Chemical Group (hereafter the 'Group') is pleased to announce that BENEBiOL, a plant-derived polycarbonate diol has been selected for the interior finish coating at the Lawson Obihiro Nishi 21-Jo Minami 4-chome Store which opened on December 1, 2023 in Obihiro City, Hokkaido, Japan.

Lawson, Inc. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo), which operates the LAWSON convenience store franchise chain, operates 13 HOKKAIDO WOOD BUILDING registered1 stores that use Hokkaido timber for their interior and/or exterior in Hokkaido. Paint made from BENEBiOL was used on the larch paneling in the restroom interior of the newly opened Lawson Obihiro Nishi 21-Jo Minami 4-chome Store. This is the first time that BENEBiOL has been used as a coating for a building material. The coating gives the wood a soft, warm texture.

BENEBiOL is the plant-derived polycarbonate diol. It was developed by the Group and is mostly used as the primary raw material for polyurethane resins. Through a process of trial and error based on our vision of 'developing groundbreaking and unprecedented products to provide added value to our customers,' we succeeded in developing a polycarbonate diol with a completely new chemical structure from plant-derived raw materials. BENEBiOL not only has up to 92% biomass content, it also has superior durability and chemical resistance. It is used for paints and coatings, synthetic leather and artificial leather, and outdoor goods.

This case is an advanced example of green transformation in the Japanese paint and construction industries. Through the development of BENEBiOL, the Group is committed to continuing to provide high value-added products and contribute to the realization of sustainable societies.
