The third edition of Recharge Earth is coming up. During this conference on September 6 and 7 in Ahoy, a sustainable energy future is the focus. Start-ups and scale-ups with innovations to accelerate the energy transition are more important than ever. So with the Innovation Expo, Recharge Earth offers young entrepreneurs a stage to showcase their innovations. During the conference you can meet more than 30 innovative companies. We highlight three in advance.

Gradyent

A smart thermostat for heat networks. That is Gradyent's Digital Twin Platform in a nutshell. With this platform, the company collects and analyzes data from industrial steam networks and district heating networks to optimally link heat supply and demand. The digital twin is a real-time model of a heat system. Such a heat system is a regional or urban heat network, better known as district heating.

The platform uses the data for real-time physical calculations, but also incorporates outside factors. In doing so, the model optimizes the distribution of heat across the network. Founder and CEO of Gradyent Hervé Huisman: "In large industries, about half of the energy is supplied through a steam network. Moreover, heat networks are going to play an increasingly important role. Optimization of these networks can therefore contribute significantly to lower energy consumption."

Ion-Energy

Extracting energy from the earth's atmosphere. Sounds like magic, but at Ion-Energy they have been working on it since 2016. And seriously too, as the company already has patents in Europe, Japan and the US. What's it all about? A tile-shaped device extracts energy from the atmosphere. Director Jop Fellinger: "It's a harvesting device. If you flatten it completely, it's like an antenna." The device then converts that "harvested" energy into direct current. Fellinger: "The energy is already there. You are already walking on the ground floor in a voltage field of 100 volts. You just have to convert that energy."

According to Ion-Energy, the annual production of a home generator - now still in the prototype phase - is comparable to that of 16 solar panels. Such a home generator would be a godsend for apartments where there is no way to install solar panels. The device does not provide storage. Nor is it necessary, since there is a constant supply and release of energy. Another advantage. The device does not require scarce materials. It is made of carbon and aluminum, among other materials.

Route scanner

A Google Maps for containers? Check, that exists! The platform Routescanner launched two years ago and has more than 10,000 registered users worldwide. What are those doing there? Seeing what the most sustainable logistics choices are for their containers. In fact, Routescanner helps shippers and forwarders gain insight into the various possible transport routes. The company does this with a multimodal platform that brings together the schedules of carriers and operators in one place.

Users can choose different forms of transport: by sea, inland waterway, by freight train or truck. The system then compares the chosen options. In doing so, the most sustainable route is always shown first. With this platform, Routescanner aims to encourage sustainable logistics choices. A conscious route choice can save up to 60 percent in CO2 emissions.
