Japan's Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and TB Global Technologies (TBG) have announced plans to develop Japan's first ammonia bunkering boom, a device used to supply fuel between ships, shipowner NYK said in a press release on Thursday.

A bunkering boom is a device consisting of pipes and hoses that connect a vessel to a supply ship for fueling. NYK and TBG will enhance the safety of supplying ammonia, using TBG's technology to prevent liquid ammonia leakage.

Ammonia is expected to play an important role in the decarbonization of the maritime industry, given the fuel does not emit carbon dioxide when burned.

NYK ordered its sixth dual-fuel liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied ammonia Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) from shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy industries in July.
