The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is committed to promoting sustainable development and has been actively encouraging public awareness of biodiversity issues in recent years.

From now until 6 May, the Company is hosting the 'Capturing Nature's Masterpieces: Wildlife Photography Contest', focusing on marine, terrestrial, and aerial species, and encouraging participants to capture the beauty of the natural world through their lenses. In addition to cash prizes, the winning entries will have the opportunity to be featured on special edition stamps, in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity with Towngas.

The competition is divided into two age groups: Adult (aged 18 and above) and Youth (aged 12 to 17), with separate submission categories for lives in the sea, on land, and in the air. Each category will award one First Prize, one Second Prize, one Third Prize, and one Merit Prize. To encourage public participation, Towngas will match the prize money with an equal donation to designated nonprofit organisations, supporting their environmental conservation efforts. Furthermore, Towngas plans to exhibit the winning works at a public event in mid-2024, effectively conveying the message of ecological preservation to a wider audience.

Mr Isaac Yeung, Towngas Head of Group ESG / Head of Group Corporate Affairs, stated, 'Biodiversity is intricately linked to human health and well-being. As we continue to pursue economic development, we must prioritise the conservation of natural assets in order to preserve and enhance biodiversity. At Towngas, we have implemented an Environmental Policy that emphasises avoiding operations in areas with rich biodiversity. We also conduct assessments for projects situated in environmentally significant areas, aiming to minimise potential negative impacts on biodiversity.' Mr Yeung encouraged photography enthusiasts to participate in the competition, enabling the public to appreciate and understand the invaluable wonders of nature through the captured images.

Towngas is actively developing green and smart energy solutions. In addition to providing a safe and reliable gas supply and popularising the use of solar photovoltaic renewable energy on the Chinese mainland. Moreover, Towngas has made substantial investments in advancing green energy alternatives for marine, terrestrial, and aerial applications. These initiatives encompass the development of environmentally friendly marine fuels like green methanol, land transportation solutions powered by hydrogen energy, and sustainable aviation fuel for aircraft use. By replacing conventional high-carbon-emission energy sources, Towngas actively contributes to the achievement of the national dual carbon goals and supports the green transportation initiatives set forth by the HKSAR Government.

As early as 2022, Towngas published the Climate-related and Nature-related Directive Guide, becoming the first Hong Kong company to issue a directive document in response to the beta framework established by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). This document evaluates and discloses the impact of Towngas and its subsidiary, Towngas Smart Energy, on environmental ecology and biodiversity, along with the associated risks and opportunities.
