WOLFSBURG (dpa-AFX) - The Tesla plant in Grünheide, Brandenburg, has been at a standstill since Tuesday following a suspected attack on an electricity pylon outside the plant. Volkswagen is better prepared against possible attacks on the power grid and operates its own power plants in several factories, above all at the main plant in Wolfsburg. "The supply of the Wolfsburg plant is ensured by our own power plant and energy distribution systems," a Group spokesperson told dpa. The power plant is located directly on the factory premises and also supplies the surrounding city with electricity and district heating.

The components plant in Kassel-Baunatal also has its own power plant. As does the electric car factory in Zwickau. "Volkswagen Sachsen operates its own combined heat and power plant on the factory premises in Zwickau, which provides the majority of the power supply for the Zwickau vehicle plant," emphasized a spokesperson for the VW subsidiary in Saxony on Wednesday.

The other plants such as Emden, Hanover, Salzgitter, Chemnitz and Dresden, on the other hand, would be supplied with energy via the public grid, just like Tesla in Grünheide. "We support the respective and responsible utility companies as far as we are able in matters relating to the safety of the infrastructure outside the plant premises," said the Group spokesperson. A spokesperson for VW Commercial Vehicles added with regard to the Hanover plant: "We have taken certain precautions to ensure that power failures do not bring production to an immediate standstill." The company would not provide details of the safety concepts./fjo/DP/stw
