BM&FBOVESPA has compensated those of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2015 that could not be reduced, thus becoming carbon neutral for another year. This initiative has been in existence since 2013, when 2011 and 2012 were base years, and became an annual process thereafter.

This action aims, among other things, to encourage the adoption of sustainability best practices by public companies and by the market overall. The action is also in line with the Exchange's Sustainability Policy approved by the Board of Directors in April 2013, as part of its Environmental Pillar, and puts into practice the commitment to advance climate change initiatives.

The compensation of GHG emissions is an evolutionary step for work that began in 2009 when BM&FBOVESPA carried out its first inventory of GHG emissions, which as of 2010 came to be verified by a third party.

In 2015, BM&FBOVESPA emitted 5,402 tons of CO2 equivalent. To compensate these emissions, there was the purchase of 5,402 tons of carbon credits, generated within the scope of the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), named Certified Emission Reductions (CER).

The carbon credits bought by the Exchange were generated by the Grid Connection of Isolated Systems, a renewable energy project registered with the United Nations (UN), of which Companhia de Energia Elétrica do Estado do Tocantins (CELTINS) and Centrais Elétricas Mato-Grossenses S. A. (CEMAT) are part.

The purpose of the project is to provide renewable electricity generation in the states of Tocantins and Mato Grosso, bringing benefits such as lower pollution and dependence on oil imports; job creation in geographically less attractive areas for other economic activities and, consequently, the promotion of social equality.

With this initiative, the Exchange seeks to identify, manage and reduce its environmental impact, contributing to global efforts against climate change and its effects.
