GPW Opens Public Consultations on New Sector Classification of Listed Companies

• GPW will replace the existing classification of companies listed on the regulated and alternative markets with a coherent sector model for all issuers of shares and bonds
• The modified classifications of companies will be accompanied by changes to sector sub-indices
• The changes will be preceded by consultations with listed companies and market participants

The Warsaw Stock Exchange has decided to introduce new sector classifications of listed companies. The existing separate models of sector classification on the regulated and alternative markets will be replaced by a coherent, three-tier classification of shares and bonds issuers.

The modification of the company sector classification aims to better mapping of the companies business segments and identification of new, previously omitted sectors such as consumer goods, electronic games and biotechnology. The modified sector classifications will be accompanied by changes to sector indices. The new key sector indices will track the share price of companies in each sector.

Open consultations with market participants are a key element of the sector classification modification. All listed companies will be polled individually regarding their opinion on GPW proposals. All investors will have an opportunity? to share their views using a form available on the GPW website.

'The current sector classification was introduced in the early years of GPW. Since then, the number of listed companies has increased and new sectors have emerged which are not reflected in the classification. We want to change this to ensure such companies are more visible. We aim to implement the process of change in collaboration with market participants, which is why we have decided to open public consultations,' said Professor Małgorzata Zaleska, President of the Management Board of GPW.

According to the timeline, public consultations will continue until mid-November. At that point, GPW will summarise all proposals and decide about the final sector classification of companies.

The new sector classifications will be effective as of the beginning of 2017.

Details of the consultation process are available here.
