Revolutionary Energy Utilization in the Global Transportation Sector Leads to the Express Development of NGV

On 8 May 2013, the summit forum of the 14th China International NGV and Gas Station Equipment Exhibition was unveiled in Beijing. NGV's express development spurs the booming development of the NGV sector in China, in return which boosts significant growth in the total number of gas refueling stations and NGVs. As a result, energy utilization in the transportation sector is on the brink of a revolution.

During the year, according to the statistics, the total number of gas refueling stations increased by 446 to 2,784, representing an increase of 19% as compared against that last year, while the LNG refueling stations accounted for 22.8% of the total gas refueling stations. The No. of NGVs increased by 473,000 to a total of 1,577,000, representing a growth of 40% as compared against that last year, while the LNG-powered vehicles amounted to 71,000. The NGVs consumed 12.6 billion cubic meters of gas, generating approximately RMB 47 billion.

According to Lee Giok Seng, Secretary of the Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicle Association, the No. of NGVs in Asia accounted for 50% of the global NGVs over the last year, turning Asia into the global fastest-growing NGV region. According to the statistics, by 2040, utilization of natural gas in the Asia Pacific region will have increased to 4% from 1% for the time being. If new breakthroughs are made in terms of technologies and policies, the percentage might increase to 10%.

Rao Chuan, Secretary of China Natural Gas Vehicle Association (in progress), summarized the NGV development in China over the last year with the following five features. First, the market experiences faster development with a growing number of market participants. Second, the terminal market boosts more trades for natural gas. Third, the NGV industry chain improves day by day. Fourth, technological breakthroughs continue to be made. Fifth, local governments continue to roll out supporting policies.

Currently, Kunlun Energy Company Limited controls two LNG terminals along with 19 LNG plants in operation and under construction, and operates 424 LNG refueling stations. In addition, it develops over 40,000 units of LNG-powered vehicles. Kunlun Energy Company Limited is committed to becoming the domestic leader of "Gas in substitution of Oil" in the LNG-powered vehicle industry.
